Top 5 Tips to Maintain a Diesel Generator

In a country like India where frequent power cuts is a harsh reality in many regions, generators can be real lifesavers. Diesel generators are known for their superior power and fuel efficiency. No wonder houses and businesses from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, depend on diesel generators to meet their specific requirements. Diesel generators in India, just like other machines, require frequent maintenance. Continuous operation can put different parts of a generator under tremendous stress. Follow these tips to get the most out of your domestic generator in India and optimize its runtime.

Check and Top up Engine Oil

Your generator’s engine oil lubricates different parts, helping reduce friction due to regular wear and tear. Always check your generator’s oil level with a dipstick after turning it off. Allow the oil in the upper part to drain back into the crankcase. Regularly top up engine oil. Periodically change the oil and oil filter (go through your owner manual for manufacturer’s instructions). Opt for an oil that complies with OEM general lubricant specifications.

Test and Clean Batteries

A generator with weak batteries cannot produce enough power to meet your requirements. Batteries must be kept fully charged and well-maintained. If your generator does not perform the indicative test to measure terminal voltage under load, use a manual battery load tester to conduct the test.

Clean the batteries with a damp cloth. If you notice signs of corrosion around the terminals, clean them with a solution of baking soda and water. In open-cell lead-acid batteries, check the specific gravity of the electrolyte in each cell and the electrolyte level (every 200 hours operation).

Check the Coolant Level

Check the coolant level every now and then. Add coolant until the level is ¾ in. If you have a heavy-duty diesel generator, add a balanced mixture of coolant additives, water, and antifreeze. Inspect and clean the exterior of the radiator with a soft brush. Be careful to avoid damaging the fins. Use low-pressure compressed air to clean the radiator.

Inspect Different Systems

Diesel can get contaminated with time. To steer clear of corrosion and other problems caused by contaminated diesel, regularly drain fuel filters. Check different systems such as the fuel system and starting system at regular intervals. Inspect charge-air cooler piping and hoses for leaks, cracks, and holes. Repair leaks around the exhaust line (usually occurs at the gaskets, connection points, and welds), if any.

Clean Your Generator

The cleaner your generator the easier it will be for you to maintain it. Repair damaged hoses and belts. Take steps to prevent wasps from nesting. Keep the engine clean.
